 Ten Ways to Become a Better Parent 

Being a parent is tough!  Children do not come with a set of instructions.  Following are some basic guidelines to become a Better Parent.

 1. Develop a sense of trust.

 2. Do things together as a family.

 3. Talk to each other; communicate.

 4. Provide experiences that allow for growth and learning.

 5. Build your child's self-esteem.

 6. Develop positive attitudes towards good health and nutrition.

 7. Provide guidelines for expected behavior.

 8. Find healthy outlets for stress.

 9. Provide for safety.

10. Teach children to respect others.

La Grange ISD Volunteer Programs 

Hermes Elementary School

One to One Reading  Contact Ann Raborn, 968-4141 to become a reading buddy for an Elementary student.  For more information click on One to One Reading in the Links section.

Brown Bag Buddy  Contact Cheryl Schmidt, 968-4100.  Brown Bag Buddies pick up a project turned in by an Elementary teacher from the office and once the project is complete, return it.  They also might cover a class so a teacher can have the opportunity to visit their own student's activity during the school day.

La Grange Intermediate School

Very Important Parents (VIP)  Contact Barbara Clemons, 968-4700 or Cheri Herbrich, 968-7025 or 968-7030.  VIPs pick up projects in the workroom and can take them home to complete or work in the teacher workroom.  They also help out in the library and deliver notes to students for the office staff.  See calendar for orientation dates.

La Grange Middle School

Leopards Achieve! Mentoring Program (LAMP)  Contact Cheri Herbrich, 968-7025 or 968-7030.  LAMP mentors talk with a 7th or 8th grade student 30 minutes a week.  This is a year long commitment between the student and mentor.  See the documentary found in the links section above.

Family Fun Night

December 10

Families of students at Hermes Elementary are invited to the Hermes Cafeteria to experience science and math investigations through a literacy approach.

Visit a variety of learning stations and participate in hands on activities.  The cafeteria will be open from 6:00 to 7:00 pm

Helping Your Elementary Student

Let your children see you read every day.  Read for enjoyment.  Your children will copy what you do.

Read expressively: talk the way the story's characters would talk; make sound effects and funny faces; and vary the pitch of your voice throughout the story to make it more interesting.
