Welcome to the building trades class of Mr. Behnke. Our class meets three times daily for two class periods each. Building trades 2 meets the first two periods of each day, followed by two classes of building trades 1.
Building trades 2 is for second and third year students. We will use a Carpentry textbook which includes chapters divided into sections with study questions after each section. There are also general study questions and vocabulary words at the end of each chapter.
After covering the first 11 chapters over general safety, we will attempt to get into a schedule of covering 1 section or 2 each day, general study questions and vocabulary on Thursday and take test over 1 chapter each Friday.
Students will also be required to keep a notebook, which will include all written work and handouts. All information must be kept in this notebook, in order. This will count for a large percentage of their 6 weeks average.
Building trades 1 is for first year students. Information will be given to the students by taking notes, handouts and lecturing. Classroom demonstrations and supervised student activities are also part of the texts.
After covering various sections over human relations, tree growth, and lumber identification we move into hand tool safety, followed by portable hand tool safety, followed by stationary power tool safety.
Once we get through tool safety, part of the period will be spent in the shop practicing proper use and safety of each tool covered. After completing all of the tool safety info. After training, students will be allowed to build small projects of their own at their own expense.
